2008 was a very... fruitful year. Conducive, if I may say so.

Life was great. Friends, family, the works.
It would've been perfect if I could spend this last day with you guys, but unfortunately I'm a few hundred kilometers away from home.

This year, I fully understood my passion for wushu.
Without it, what would life be?

I know I've had several attitude problems. If I have ever offended any of you guys, please accept my most sincere apologies.

This year, although in the final days, I finally met a coach who truly acknowledges my talent. My passion.

Yeah, and I also participated in my first wushu competition.
It's really a small one, and although I failed to win it, it was very meaningful.
Even though you didn't blame me, I still felt very sorry for losing, teacher.
I know you had high hopes for me. And I let you down.
But it was meaningful nonetheless.
A stepping stone to a brighter tomorrow.

My only regret now is that I have to be a few hundred kilometers away from home.
Life'd be great had I not left.

WUSHU EXPOSURE CAMP 2008

Yes. I'm back.
And now I'm gonna blog about it.
I just gave a brief description last year, but this time I'm gonna write in detail.

Awrite, here it goes.

First day.

Arrived at the Puchong Rakan Muda Sports Complex at around twelve-hundred hours to avoid the massive human jam that usually occurs around thirteen-hundred hours. Apparently, I wasn't the earliest one to arrive. Some participants from Johor have already reached before my time of arrival. So, I checked-in and talked to Zhe Kai, Wei Yoong and Aidan who arrived a wee bit later than me. I was assigned to team Wudang. Team mates are Janisse, Aidan, Edwin, Wan Chee, Suriya, Crystal Ong (local singer), Jing Hang and a dude who I can't seem to remember his name. Then, we gathered at the canteen at around two and proceeded into the main hall for a brief introduction.

At first, all of us thought that we were going to design a flag as usual. Turns out that the facilitators had something else in mind. We were asked to make mock weapons out of cardboard and newspaper. After a brief discussion, we all decided to make a sword since we were Wudang. Alright, I'll continue about this later.

Training time! My favourite =)
Each and every participant was given a dueling broadsword. The routine was actually really interesting, being a combination of Daoshu and Nandao styles. Our coach, Jung Jieh, asked Jan, Aidan and I to stand in front while practicing cause we hack and slice way too fast.

Fast forward to nineteen-thirty hours.

We expected the talk about Common Injuries Found in Wushu Athletes to be quite boring, judging from previous exprerience. Turns out that they actually found a very interesting guai lou who is the acting physiotherapist of the National Sports Team. He taught us the importance of strecthing, ways to overcome our injuries and the benefits of ambidextrousity. If there's one thing I like about him, it's the fact that he likes pork. He says that pork is the best meat.

After the talk was the treasure hunt. Again.
Ai Huat played a fool out of us. I danced for the first time in my life =.=
We were supposed to find 9 badges from the last camp. I'm not gonna elaborate about this, since we lost dreadfully along with 3 other teams. Only team Hengshan and Shaolin managed to even find some badges.

Second day.

We started the day by warming up and doing the basic Changquan. Nothing interesting about this.
Later, we were allowed to touch up our handicraft weapons a little while waiting for our turn to take a look at the mock-up crime scene made for the CSI game. Yes. CSI. Again.

Training time again! But still the same stuff. Not gonna elaborate.

Fast-forward to one o'clock. We had our lunch and it's time to touch up our weapons again. Only now we realize that that handle of the sword and the blade will never hold. Jung Jieh came up with a brilliant idea, that is to make the blade and the handle into two different weapons. After another brief discussion, we decided to make the blade into an axe of Hidan's scythe design and the handle into a hook. But, the axe turned out to look more like a wrench. Then, we noticed that the axe can actually be used to lock an opponent's weapon. Thus, I named the axe the Soul Reaping Axe. The hook was named the Hawk's Talon.

Training! Skip skip skip.

After dinner, we finally finished our mock weapons, complete with a make-up story of their history.

Then came the wushu talk. An old uncle from the National Wushu Federation came to explain to us the rules and regulations of a standard wushu competition. During the explanation, coach Lim Kim asked a few of us to demonstrate some basic movements. He asked me to do a horse stance. Luckily there was no mistake or points deduction for my move. There was also a quiz. Janisse made a mistake and was punished. I wouldn't say it was severe, but still too darn hilarious. I'll post the video at the end of this post.

Later, we were asked to do our CSI report. We didn't do any cheesy dramatization. Just pure explanation. No comment on that too.

Third day.

We were asked to jog 2 rounds around the complex to start off the day. Then, we did some stretching at the futsal court.

Later, the coaches showed us several wushu videos. China videos mostly. Lim Kim said that the China judges cheated. He gave Zhao Qing Jian 9.50 in a video while in reality he got 9.80.

Training! Jung Jieh told me that he hopes that I can join the In Camp Wushu Competition, but it is not his right to decide. I had to fight for it. Skip everything else.

Fast-forward till one o'clock again. Lim Yew Fai came to the camp to be interviewed by us (or so it's called). I'm feeling really lazy right now, so I'm just gonna explain about this briefly. He told about what motivated him to take up wushu and how he lived through years of injury kind of stuff.

Training!

After dinner.
The competition commences.
First was in-team.
I missed a step.
I MISSED a STEP.
How the HELL can I miss out a step!?
I mean like, I haven't missed out steps in wushu routines in a long time.
Bah, nevermind. Han Zhong said I was ok. He told me that speed isn't everything. I also had to be crisp.

Fast-forward 15 minutes.

I watched the previous four persons perform. I told myself : "I actually might stand a chance at this."
Then came my turn. I told myself : "Don't lose balance. Don't lose balance."
But I still did.
*Sighs*
I blew it.
I really blew it this time.

Next was wushu night.
Everyone did a performance, whether basic or advanced.
I did my freestyle for the first time. Doesn't feel as solid as the contemporary.

After that, we played a few station games. One involved drawing blindfolded and have another member from your group guess what it is. Another one involved immersing your hands into starch goo and searching for a Singapore 5 cent coin. There were 6 games in total, and I don't really feel like elaborating.

Then, a facilitator brought us into the hall to discuss a so called sneak attack on the head coach with water guns. We acted as if we were singing and proceeded to the offices. When we reached the office, someone told the facilitator that we haven't filled water in our guns yet. I looked up and saw people walking at the upper level. I immediately ducked for cover behind a Milo advert board. A second later, plastic bags filled with water came raining down from above. I successfully avoided the first attack wave. Quick thinking, huh? XD

The following events were just water carnage, water carnage, and more water carnage. I charged into the guys toilet and took a whole bucket of starch goo heads on. Everyone scurried at the sight of me. Amelia yelled at me when I touched her face with my gooey hand. Don't be mad, ok? We're just having fun.

Skip all the fun. Skip all the fun.

We stopped playing at around Oh-Two-Hundred hours. I stayed back along with most of the boys to clear the very terrible flood in the toilet and the goo stains on the floor.

Last day.

Rehearsed once after breakfast. Then chat chat chat.
The VIPs entered the hall at around 11. We did the performance, listened to their speeches and received our certificates.

After lunch, when we gathered in the hall again, Robin asked us to take our bags and leave so that he could leave too. Everyone just sat on the floor because nobody wanted to leave the party so soon. Then, Robin gave use each a copy of the Kinta poster with his signature on it. I left at 1, when most of the people have already left.

I'm already starting to feel down without all the fun. The wushu mood.
Oh well. At least I've won a finalist medal. The first medal I won in wushu.
