When poet Dave Morrison was diagnosed with tonsillar cancer he reacted the only way he knew how; by writing poems. "In these honest and courageous poems, Morrison shares his turbulent journey through the landscape of cancer, its painful paths and nearly unclimbable hills, its tremendous skies with bright stars of gratitude. These poems encompass a geography of emotion, from self-deprecation and moments of despair, to humor, love, and resilience. Morrison describes the beginning of illness, the long days “where each breath is a/ noticeable event,” the measurement and exhaustion of pain, the beautiful allure of morphine. This collection reminds us that life’s brutal blows are meant to help us learn “important lessons about what/ is real and good and valuable,” and to sing “a song of thanks/ as loud as a/ saxophone.” - Ellen Taylor, author of Floating . This second edition contains additional poems and extended author notes.

unavoidably sad as well as bittersweet and, occasionally, defiant poems in which humility and gratitude walk hand-in-hand. Poetry that recreates the author's loving gratitude for his wife (his caretaker) and for life itself--its "unspeakable beauty." A testimony from the front lines of discomfort, pain, and anxiety--without a trace of self-pity; without artifice; an exquisite homily from the Sick to the "Un-Sick." The situation too dire for glibness or verbosity: a time for pared-to-the-bone language and direct-to-the-heart communiques--which is exactly what Morrison delivers.

Cancer Poems Dave Morrison 9781514794524 Books Reviews

The poems speak so beautifully of the pain and challenge of illness with hope and appreciation for life.
This collection of poems from Morrison's experience dealing with cancer left me aching the way listening to great music does. It touched emotions from dealing with cancer in my own family, but more importantly speaks to the importance of living a life of love and grace. Dave's strength as an artist has always been an unflinching courage in presenting himself with simplicity and honesty. Highly recommended even if you haven't experienced cancer firsthand, or, hell, even if you're not really into poetry.
Dave Morrison wrote phenomenal poems before cancer arrived like an unwelcome guest. Who would have thought that he'd keep writing through the toughest moments of a very rough cancer treatment; through severe reactions to the medication, through the haze of pain meds, through the dark nights of the soul.
What's a more powerful word than phenomenal? Whatever it is, it describes these poems.
Dave Morrison's life is moving along beautifully as a poet and as a musician—and then he is diagnosed with cancer.

These honest pieces in Cancer Poems speak a truth that too many must face, as in the brutal truth of "Radiation Burns" or in his longest poem, "A Day in the Life of Healing." We've been advised by countless mystics to live in the now, but staying in the "Present Moment" for Dave means that he must accept pain and wait to get back to his life. "Pain I" and "Pain II" hit close to home as I recall doctors and nurses asking my husband, a cancer patient (and survivor!), his pain number (on a scale of 1 to 10) countless times. Routine question, but complicated answer. And the "Un-Sick"? Powerful. We don't realize how lucky we are until we or a loved one is diagnosed.

His wife is his rock, and "Last Night" spoke to my heart. And yet, through the uncertainty of remission and the agony of treatments and the total shift of the reality he knew, Dave remains a poet. Who but a poet could write ". . . I allow my pen to skate / lazily over the page creating / what is essentially a daydream." Dave Morrison, realizing today will not be the day he dies, says, ". . . What shall I do with / this perfect day?"

You shall live and create and be a husband, Dave. And we shall be thankful for your gift of words.
